BABAYEnihan
[Women-to-Women Solidarity]
A portmanteau of 'babaye' which means 'woman' and 'bayanihan' which means 'solidarity', BABAYEnihan (women-to-women solidarity) is LILAK's solidarity response for indigenous women amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters and conflict situations.
- BABAYEnihan is a response initiative of LILAK to the urgent needs of indigenous women, and their families and communities, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.Beginning in April 2020, during the first surge of positive cases and the implementation of the nationwide militaristic lockdown, LILAK gathered its resources, opened its channels, and in partnership with indigenous women leaders, created BABAYEnihan, a women-to-women solidarity program. From the solidarity of many individuals and groups, indigenous women were able to distribute relief and recovery packs in their communities (consisting of food packs, seeds, farm implements, and hygiene kits). On its second year, LILAK expanded BABAYEnihan and included in its initiatives, information campaigns, capacity trainings and workshops, and other necessary responses to lessen the vulnerabilities of indigenous women to natural disasters, which includes, apart from COVID-19, typhoons, earthquakes, and conflict-induced disasters.
